Sister of Charity, Sr Stanislaus Kennedy, based in Ireland, and Holy Faith sister, Rosario Hackshaw, half a world away in Trinidad were recently honoured for their years of service in their respective countries.
Sr Stan was placed first in Ireland’s Greatest 100 Women in an online poll conducted by the Sunday Independent. In Dublin she is perhaps best known for her work for the homeless and for founding Focus housing. Also featuring in the top 100 women were Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Sisters, and Mary Aikenhed, foundress of the Sisters of Charity.
Holy Faith is connected with Focus Housing through having donated land in Finglas on which social housing was constructed in a street which is now called Aylward Green in memory of our founders Margaret Aylward.
Sr Rosario founded a micro financing group, HOPE, which gives low interest loans to people to start a small business and gain some financial independence. She is grateful to the Irish Aid agency, Misean Cara, for financial support. Sr Rosario will receive the Dr Matthews 2014 Sunshine Award in October for her humanitarian and welfare service.
