Sharing the inspiring journey of Ms. Zakia John, who embarked on a BSc in Environmental Science with the UK Open University in October 2022, all while completing her studies at Solidarity Teacher Training College, Yambio, South Sudan, to qualify as a Primary School teacher. Zakia is from the Nuba Mountains, a border territory currently badly affected by the Sudan war.
Every Saturday, Zakia dedicated her time to working with Sr. Jacinta Prunty, a Holy Faith sister on mission in South Sudan, alongside others who have successfully completed Open University modules in Primary Education and Early Childhood. This commitment to her education and community is truly commendable and reflects the Holy Faith ethos of supporting those who are striving to improve their lives. Recently, Zakia received the results of her second Open University module in Science and passed with flying colours. Sr. Jacinta, her guide, was delighted that she excelled in the online exam, which was the largest part of the assessment. With strong Continuous Assessment marks, Zakia has successfully completed Stage 1 of her Open University degree, and is now qualified to act as a teacher with fellow teachers, the long-term purpose of this further study. Gratitude to the generous Irish donor whose funding made this possible, and to the fundraising officer in Rome, for ensuring the timely payment of fees. All this support, in spirit and in practical ways, is invaluable. Congratulations, Zakia, on your outstanding achievement! Your success is a testament to the power of dedication, community support, and the Holy Faith mission of uplifting those who strive for a better future.
